Blessing of the Easter Food – April 4 | 12Noon

Please join us for the Blessing of the Easter Food on Holy Saturday, April 4th at 12NOON

✨ The Blessing of the Easter Basket for the first meal of Easter is a cherished Catholic tradition that has been passed down for centuries, especially among families of Eastern European heritage. Rich in meaning and symbolism, this beautiful custom takes place on Holy Saturday, when families prepare baskets filled with foods that reflect the joy and hope of Easter. 🌷

The tradition grew from the strict fasting once observed during Lent, when foods such as meat, eggs, butter, and cheese were set aside. Easter morning marked not only the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, but also the joyful end of the Lenten fast. In thanksgiving, the Church began the custom of blessing the foods that would be shared at the first Easter meal. ✝️

Traditionally, Easter baskets may include decorated eggs, symbolizing the Resurrection of Christ; bread, reminding us that Jesus is the Bread of Life; meats such as ham, sausage, bacon, or lamb, representing joy, abundance, and Christ the Lamb of God; butter shaped like a lamb; salt, recalling that we are called to be the salt of the earth; cheese, symbolizing moderation; horseradish and other seasonings, reminding us of Christ’s Passion; and wine, representing the Blood of the Lord. The basket is then covered with a white cloth, symbolizing the linen in which Christ was wrapped after His death. 🕊️

This beloved tradition is both deeply meaningful and wonderfully heartwarming. Children especially delight in helping prepare and decorate the family basket and proudly carrying it to church for the blessing. Some families even create special baskets for their children, filled with fruit, candy, or other treats to be blessed. 🧺💛

We invite you and your family to bring your Easter basket to St. Anastasia on Holy Saturday at 12noon. Come share in this beautiful tradition and perhaps begin a new Easter custom in your own home. Alleluia! 🌸
